Green “open to work” Circle around your photo – Yes or No?

I get asked this question a lot and my answer is always NO and here is why. Simply put….people want what they can’t have. When your profile announces “I’m open to work” front and center, it can unintentionally shift perception from “qualified professional exploring options” to “actively unemployed and searching.”

Recruiters don’t rely on the green circle. LinkedIn’s backend tools already show who’s open to work, even if the banner isn’t visible.

Your photo is prime real estate for first impressions. The green ring competes with your face, your expression, and your professional presence. Instead of communicating confidence, it can visually shout “I’m looking!”

In negotiations and networking, perceived leverage matters. When you look like you’re in high demand, opportunities come to you. When you look like you’re waiting for them, people may assume they can offer less.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD:

1. Keep your photo professional and clean
2. Optimize your headline and “about” section to highlight your value, not your availability
3. Be sure you have your jobs updated with bullet points
4. Reach out to your network personally and let them know.
5. Update your skills and technology, a lot of recruiters are searching by keywords.
6. Use the Private “Open to Work” setting so recruiters can still see you’re available without broadcasting it publicly.
